Prostate cancer can be a devastating diagnosis, but it can be effectively treated when caught during the early stages. Your cancer care physician can determine which treatment method is best suited to your individual needs, but it is still important to educate yourself on the possible side effects associated with each type of treatment.
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy is a systemic treatment method which utilizes a combination of medications to destroy existing cancer cells and prevent new ones from growing. Treatments are provided intravenously and may result in a number of side effects including anemia, changes in appetite, constipation, diarrhea, hair loss, infection, bleeding complications, sores along the mouth and tongue, and changes in memory. Chemotherapy may also lead to nausea and vomiting, changes in fertility, and peripheral neuropathy.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy refers to the use of high-energy radiation beams to shrink and destroy cancer cells using an outside machine or a radioactive implant placed near the tumor cells. Both external-beam and internal radiation therapy can cause several side effects including skin irritation, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, infertility, changes in memory, and fibrosis.
CyberKnife Surgery
While chemotherapy and radiation are effective cancer treatments, the side effects can be difficult to withstand. Fortunately, advances in medical technology have led to the development of stereotactic radiosurgery—a unique non-surgical treatment method that uses three-dimensional imaging to focus several radiation beams onto a specific tumor without causing damage to the surrounding tissues or organs. CyberKnife VSI is not only effective on tumors located nearly anywhere in the body but also significantly reduces the severity and duration of most cancer treatment side effects.

The term "cancer" is actually a general name used to describe more than 100 different diseases characterized by the growth of abnormal cells. While cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States, research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that one-third of all cancer mortalities can be avoided through prevention—and another third through early detection and treatment. Check out this general overview for more information on cancer.
What Causes Cancer?
Cancer develops when the healthy cells within your body begin to multiply and divide at an uncontrolled rate, often times forming into a solid mass or tumor. This may be the result of DNA damage or inherited mutations. However, unlike healthy cells that eventually deteriorate and die, cancer cells will continue to grow and form new cancerous cells. These cells will often metastasize or spread to other areas of the body.
Risk Factors
There are a number of factors that may increase the risk of cancer development. This includes but is not limited to genetic predisposition, hormones, overexposure to the sun, tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, obesity, and age. Certain environmental factors, chemicals, viruses, and bacteria can also lead to cancer.
Signs and Symptoms
The symptoms of cancer will vary based on the affected cells or part of the body. However, common symptoms include a new mole or changes in existing moles, thickening of the breast tissue or other part of the body, sores that will not heal, changes in bowel or bladder habits, and difficulty swallowing. Additional symptoms include unusual weight gain or loss, chronic fatigue, hoarseness or a persistent cough, and unusual bleeding.
