What You Need to Know About Getting PSA Tests

    Last updated 2 months ago

If you are like many men, you have thought about your risk for developing prostate cancer. It may be comforting to know that important new developments in prostate cancer screening have made it possible to detect and treat the disease early on. However, testing and treatment options vary from patient to patient, so you should speak with your doctor to review these answers to frequently asked questions about PSA testing.

What Does the PSA Test Involve?

PSA stands for Prostate-Specific Antigen, a protein produced by the cells in the prostate gland. A PSA test measures the level of PSA in the blood by using a small blood sample. Because PSA levels are often elevated in men with prostate cancer, some experts recommend a PSA test in conjunction with a digital rectal exam to test for cancer.

Who Should Have the PSA Test?

Until recently, many professional medical organizations recommended PSA testing for high-risk candidates and all men over age 50. Although some doctors continue to recommend this screening procedure, they stress that all patients should be aware of potential risks associated with the PSA test

What Are the Risks of PSA Testing?

Various factors can cause a man’s PSA levels to fluctuate, and there is no specific normal or abnormal level of blood PSA. The test may give false-positive or false-negative results, leading to over or under-treatment of prostate cancer. Also, even if a tumor is detected, some tumors grow so slowly that they will never be life-threatening.

What Are the Pros of PSA Testing?

PSA testing itself is relatively simple and pain-free, and the test has helped many patients and their doctors detect cancer early. When cancer is diagnosed in the earliest stages of the disease, it is generally easier to successfully treat.

What Is a Prostate Cancer Gleason Score?

Finding out that you or a loved one has prostate cancer is a difficult experience, but it is easier to handle when you approach treatment through small, manageable steps. As you will learn in this video, diagnosis and assessment is the first step that you will need to take.

The Gleason grading system assesses the aggressiveness of a patient’s prostate cancer. Using the results of your biopsy, a doctor examines tissue patterns and assigns your cancer a number from one to five based on the degree of cell deformation. By looking at the two most common tissue patterns, the doctor can determine how advanced your cancer is.

The Gleason Score is only one of three tools used to assess the stage of prostate cancer at Colorado CyberKnife VSI. We are dedicated to helping each patient receive the highest level of customized care from diagnosis through treatment. Call our Rocky Mountain facility today at (888) 592-8185 to learn more about our state-of-the-art technologies—including prostate cancer robotic radiation.

    CyberKnife Prostate Cancer Treatment

If you’re looking for a non-invasive treatment option for prostate cancer, ask your oncologist if you’re a good candidate for CyberKnife surgery. Despite the name, CyberKnife does not involve any incisions. Instead, CyberKnife is a type of radiation therapy that destroys cancer cells from outside the body. It is suitable for men whose cancer has not spread beyond the prostate gland. Most men require a total of five CyberKnife treatment sessions, which typically last about 30 to 40 minutes and do not usually induce discomfort. This Denver prostate cancer treatment is also supported by clinical research. In one study that evaluated men five years after undergoing CyberKnife, 95% of low-risk patients had no elevation in PSA levels.
